Mechanism of Action
Melanin primarily functions by absorbing and redistributing damaging UV radiation (UVA, UVB, UVC) and blue light within the upper skin layers, safeguarding cellular genetic material. Eumelanin, a specific type, is exceptionally effective, dissipating over 99.9% of absorbed UV radiation to significantly reduce cellular damage and the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, melanin acts as an antioxidant, scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) to boost intrinsic cellular antioxidant defenses and mitigate oxidative stress.
