Mechanism of Action
Upon topical application, Mannan creates a thin, continuous film on the skin's surface. This polymeric film serves as a physical barrier, offering protection against environmental pollutants and external irritants. Concurrently, it reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by locking in hydration, thereby benefiting dry or dehydrated skin. Its film-forming property also contributes to a smoother skin feel and improves the application aesthetics of cosmetic formulations.

Mannan is insoluble in water under normal conditions but can be solubilized at 20 mg/mL in a 5% w/v sodium hydroxide solution. Neutralization with 50% acetic acid subsequently causes it to precipitate as a fine colloidal suspension. While optimal pH for general cosmetic formulations is typically 4.5-5.5 for skin compatibility, a precise optimal pH range for Mannan's stability in formulations has not been identified.
