Mechanism of Action
This extract precisely modulates inflammatory responses by inhibiting NF-kB and MAPk pathways, leading to a substantial reduction in nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin-E2 (PGE-2) production, and downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Its robust antioxidant activity stems from rich phenolic compounds, flavonoids (e.g., rutin, apigenin, quercetin), and carotenoids, which efficiently scavenge free radicals and protect against reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antibacterial effects are attributed to diverse phytochemicals including tannins and saponins. Additionally, it stimulates collagen synthesis, supporting tissue repair, and demonstrates broad UV absorptivity.

Stability
No specific optimal pH range for cosmetic formulation stability has been definitively identified. However, the extract's diverse components demonstrate solubility in various solvents including water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methanol, suggesting the presence of both water-soluble and oil-soluble active compounds, depending on the extraction method utilized.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not formally assessed Manihot Utilissima Leaf Extract. It is reported to be in use in cosmetic products under the FDA's Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP). While raw cassava leaves contain cyanogenic compounds, proper extraction methods are critical to reduce or remove these substances for safe cosmetic application. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates its concerns for cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, and developmental & reproductive toxicity as 'LOW'. Notably, an aqueous extract incorporated into a cream did not cause skin irritation in a 20-subject human study.
