MALTOBIONIC ACID.

Valuable CAS 534-42-9 / BUFFERING

Maltobionic Acid is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) derived from maltose, renowned for its multifunctional benefits in precision skincare. Its larger molecular structure allows for gentle exfoliation, significant humectant properties, and potent antioxidant protection, making it exceptionally well-suited for all skin types, including sensitive ones.

Exfoliant Humectant Antioxidant Chelating Anti-aging Barrier Support Collagen Preservation Skin Renewal

Science

As a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) derived from maltose and gluconic acid, Maltobionic Acid gently exfoliates by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells in the stratum corneum, facilitating their removal. Its larger molecular weight, compared to AHAs, leads to slower skin penetration and consequently, reduced irritation. Maltobionic Acid acts as a powerful humectant, utilizing its multiple hydroxyl groups to draw and bind water, thereby enhancing skin hydration, elasticity, and softness, and reinforcing the natural skin barrier. It functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and chelating metal ions to protect against oxidative stress and photoaging. Crucially, it inhibits matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes, preventing collagen degradation and contributing to its anti-aging efficacy. This ingredient also helps minimize transepidermal water loss (TEWL), promotes skin cell renewal and collagen synthesis, and possesses anti-inflammatory properties.

Key findings

  1. 01 Demonstrated improvement in facial skin elasticity, firmness, texture, and dryness, alongside an increase in forearm skin thickness over a 12-week period.
  2. 02 When incorporated into an anti-aging regimen, these concentrations resulted in measurable reductions in crow's feet and significant improvements in skin texture and radiance after 16 weeks.
  3. 03 Applied twice daily for 4 weeks, led to an 81% reduction in fine periocular lines, a 97% improvement in hydration, texture, and tone/color, an 81% more youthful appearance, and 94% more radiant skin.
  4. 04 Exhibited strong dose-dependent inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in vitro, thereby preventing collagen degradation.

Stability

Optimal pH for stability and efficacy is between 3.5 and 4.5, with an ideal final formulation pH of 3.5 to 5.0 (lower for exfoliation, higher for gentleness). It is a white to off-white crystalline powder with moderate hygroscopicity. Stability is good, but formulations should avoid temperatures exceeding 70°C and be protected from prolonged UV exposure. It functions as both a buffering and chelating agent.
