MAGNESIUM SILICATE.

Valuable CAS 1343-88-0 / ABSORBENT, ANTICAKING, BULKING, OPACIFYING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

Magnesium Silicate is a mineral-derived compound primarily valued in skincare formulations for its ability to absorb excess sebum and moisture, imparting a matte finish. It significantly contributes to product texture and stability, ensuring smooth application and consistency.

Absorbent Anticaking Bulking Agent Opacifying Viscosity Controlling

Science

This ingredient functions by physically absorbing surplus oils and moisture from the skin's surface, resulting in a mattified appearance. Beyond its absorbent properties, Magnesium Silicate acts as an anticaking agent to prevent product clumping, a bulking agent to increase volume, an opacifying agent to reduce transparency, and a viscosity-controlling agent to optimize product thickness. It enhances the sensory experience by contributing to a soft and smooth skin feel.

Naturally-sourced (mined) Magnesium Silicate, particularly in powdered formulations such as face powders or dry shampoos, carries an insufficient safety determination for incidental inhalation. While not all forms pose this risk, caution is warranted for products where airborne particles might be a factor.

Stability

Magnesium Silicate is sensitive to low pH environments, undergoing decomposition by mineral acids. Its structural integrity can be compromised as Mg2+ ions leach out more readily in acidic conditions. Optimal stability for Magnesium Silicate Hydrate (M-S-H) phases is observed within the pH range of 8.0 to 12.0, with an ideal formation pH around 10.5. Products containing Magnesium Silicate typically exhibit a slightly alkaline pH.

Sensitization risk Low

The CIR Expert Panel considers Magnesium Silicate safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating. It is recognized as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) and accepted as a food additive in Europe. The FDA includes it in its Inactive Ingredients Guide for oral tablets. A maximum concentration of 21.6% has been reported in leave-on eye shadows. Although generally well-tolerated, rare instances of skin irritation or allergic reactions are possible, hence patch testing is advisable.
