Mechanism of Action
Magnesium Lithospermate B (MLB) functions through a precise multi-target approach within the skin. It acts as a potent antioxidant by efficiently neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby safeguarding cellular integrity from oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory prowess stems from suppressing key signaling pathways, notably nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1), which reduces the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators like TNF-α and various interleukins, as well as inflammation-associated enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). For visible anti-aging effects, MLB modulates collagen metabolism by boosting type I procollagen synthesis while inhibiting the destructive activity and expression of matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-9, MMP-12, and MMP-13, which degrade collagen. This dual action supports skin firmness and reduces wrinkle appearance by also suppressing oxidative stress and modulating the MAPK pathway. The general magnesium component further contributes to enhanced skin hydration, balanced sebum production, and fortified skin barrier function by promoting filaggrin production.
