Science

Magnesium Ascorbate functions as a potent antioxidant, effectively neutralizing free radicals to shield the skin from oxidative damage. It actively supports collagen synthesis, enhances skin elasticity, reduces visible signs of aging, and promotes healing processes, while brightening the complexion by inhibiting tyrosinase activity to suppress melanin production. Concurrently, Magnesium PCA acts as a superior humectant, drawing and retaining vital moisture within the stratum corneum to fortify the skin barrier. It further stimulates cellular regeneration, boosts collagen and elastin production to smooth features, and contributes anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, regulating sebum and optimizing hydration through aquaporins.

Key findings

  1. 01 Magnesium PCA, at concentrations of 0.5-3%, effectively moisturizes, revitalizes, and regenerates skin, strengthening the skin barrier and stimulating collagen and elastin to reduce wrinkles.
  2. 02 Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) demonstrates antioxidant properties within a concentration range of 0.001-3%.
  3. 03 Specific skin brightening benefits, particularly from inhibiting melanin production, are observed with formulas containing 10% Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP), showing superior results compared to other Vitamin C derivatives.

Stability

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) maintains stability in aqueous solutions up to pH 7, ideally formulated within emulsion-based products with a pH range of 5-7. Discoloration may occur in formulations with a pH below 6, suggesting an optimal cosmetic aesthetic range of 6.0-7.0. MAP is notably heat-stable, tolerating temperatures up to 80°C for 20 hours, and can be incorporated into the water phase before heating; warming to approximately 40°C can aid dissolution. Magnesium Ascorbate generally possesses good stability and is less acidic than pure L-Ascorbic Acid.

Conflicts

  • The electrolyte nature of PCA salts can present formulation challenges, potentially leading to precipitation, turbidity, or a decrease in product viscosity.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used, pending re-evaluation
Sensitization risk Low

The CIR Expert Panel previously deemed Magnesium Ascorbate (and its phosphate derivative, MAP) and Magnesium PCA safe for use in cosmetic products. However, the safety assessment for ascorbate derivatives was reopened in September 2024 for re-evaluation based on updated data. While Magnesium PCA has shown safety even at low concentrations (0.1-0.18%), and previous CIR assessments noted maximum concentrations around 3% for both MAP and Magnesium PCA, MAP is commercially used at 10% for its brightening efficacy. Side effects are rare, but patch testing is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin.
