Mechanism of Action
Luffa Cylindrica Stem Sap functions by stimulating the growth and migration of human skin fibroblasts. It activates and enhances the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway while down-regulating PPARγ, which collectively leads to an increased synthesis of cellular type I procollagen and elastin. This ingredient also effectively down-regulates matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-2, and MMP-9), enzymes responsible for collagen degradation. Furthermore, LuCS has been shown to reverse skin damage induced by UV-A irradiation and to induce lipid accumulation in preadipocytes via the CEBP/α signaling pathway, which contributes to improved skin condition and elasticity. The sap contains bioactive compounds, including flavonoids for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, saponins for conditioning, tannins offering astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, Vitamin C supporting collagen synthesis, and organic acids for conditioning.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro treatment with Luffa Cylindrica Stem Sap stimulated the growth and migration of human skin fibroblasts, activated EGFR signaling, enhanced EGFR expression, and down-regulated PPARγ. This cascade led to the synthesis of cellular type I procollagen and elastin, and the down-regulation of proteinases (MMP-1, -2, -9), suggesting an anti-wrinkle effect and improved skin condition.
- 02 LuCS treatment reversed skin damage induced by UV-A irradiation in human skin fibroblasts, as observed in an in vitro study.
- 03 In vitro exposure to LuCS induced lipid accumulation of preadipocytes via activation of the CEBP/α signaling pathway, indicating potential for enhancing skin condition and elasticity.
