Mechanism of Action
This extract exerts its beneficial effects through several distinct mechanisms. Bioactive polyphenols and terpenes deliver powerful antioxidant properties, shielding skin cells from oxidative stress. A high concentration of vital minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and zinc, are crucial for maintaining skin moisturization and supporting the cross-linking of structural fibers. Functioning as a marine mineral energizer, it helps regulate skin electrolyte balance, facilitates osmotic exchanges, and boosts overall skin vitality. This contributes to skin homeostasis, prevents dehydration, regulates cellular turnover for an even complexion, reinforces the skin’s protective barrier against environmental threats, and strengthens natural defenses by neutralizing reactive oxygen species.

Stability
The ingredient demonstrates stability across a broad spectrum of cosmetic formulations. However, its efficacy and the solubilization of key minerals like calcium and magnesium are highly pH-dependent, with greater release occurring at acidic pH (e.g., pH 2.0) and reduced release at neutral to alkaline pH (e.g., pH 6.0 and 8.0). Precipitation may be observed at higher concentrations when solubilized in culture medium.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that Lithothamnion Calcareum Extract is safe for use in cosmetic applications. Acute oral toxicity studies in Wistar rats showed no signs of toxicity at a single dose of 2000 mg/kg of an aqueous suspension. However, subchronic oral toxicity studies in Wistar rats at daily doses of 1000 mg/kg or 2000 mg/kg over 90 days indicated potential systemic changes related to very high calcium intake (decreased serum albumin, total protein, calcium, increased creatinine). It is important to note these observations are specific to high oral ingestion and not topical cosmetic use. The extract is also recognized as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) as a food supplement (Aquamin®).
