LAURETH-7 CITRATE.

Valuable CAS 161756-30-5 / CLEANSING, SURFACTANT - CLEANSING

Laureth-7 Citrate is a multi-functional ingredient acting as a gentle surfactant, effective emulsifier, and skin conditioning agent. It aids in stabilizing cosmetic formulations by bridging oil and water phases, while simultaneously delivering mild cleansing and enhancing skin hydration.

Cleansing Surfactant Emulsifying Skin Conditioning Moisturizing Anti-irritant

Science

This ingredient functions as an amphiphilic surfactant and emulsifier, skillfully binding water and oil to create stable and harmonious cosmetic formulations. It reduces the surface tension of a product, ensuring smooth and uniform application across the skin. In cleansing applications, it delivers a gentle yet effective purification, preserving the skin's inherent moisture barrier from excessive stripping. Notably, Laureth-7 Citrate can minimize irritation potential from other surfactants and active ingredients, thus acting as a formula stabilizer. It actively supports the skin's barrier function by drawing in moisture and reducing transepidermal water loss. For leave-on products, it serves as an emollient and moisturizer, refining skin texture and providing essential hydration. Additionally, its chelating properties contribute to overall formula stability and enhance ingredient efficacy.

Key findings

  1. 01 No signs of irritation or sensitisation were observed in a human repeated insult patch test (RIPT) at a 10% concentration.
  2. 02 An in vitro eye irritation study reported none to slight eye irritation potential at a 5% concentration.
  3. 03 Recommended concentrations vary by application: 0.1-1.0% for leave-on products, 1.0-5.0% for shower products, and generally <5% when utilized as an emulsifier.

Stability

Laureth-7 Citrate is expected to be stable under standard conditions. It can withstand heating during mixing, though temperatures exceeding 80°C should be avoided. Storage below 20°C may lead to turbidity or crystallization, a condition that does not impair product quality and can be reversed by gently heating to approximately 40°C.

Synergies

  • Functions as an anti-irritant, reducing potential irritation from other surfactants and active ingredients.
  • Acts as a formula stabilizer, enhancing overall product integrity.

Conflicts

  • No specific incompatibilities identified, but its surfactant properties may augment the dermal penetration of other chemicals in the formulation.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel assessed Laureth-7 (the ethoxylated alcohol constituent) and deemed it safe for use with concentration or use limitations. Laureth-7 Citrate itself demonstrated no irritation or sensitization at 10% in human patch tests and only minor eye irritation at 5% in vitro. The citric acid component is classified as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). However, as an ethoxylated ingredient, there are potential concerns regarding trace impurities like 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, which are associated with the Laureth-7 component. The SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) indicated in 2011 that there was insufficient data to fully evaluate the safe use of Laureth-7 (the alcohol ethoxylate) in cosmetic products at that time.
