Mechanism of Action
This ingredient operates via a synergistic mechanism. *Dendropanax morbiferus* extracts (DMEs), rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds, exhibit potent antioxidant activity, scavenging 60%–92% of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals like DPPH and ABTS. DMEs also possess robust anti-inflammatory properties by decreasing nitric oxide (NO) and interleukin production, and inhibiting key inflammatory pathways (NF-κB, TNF-α). Furthermore, DMEs demonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against common skin pathogens such as *S. epidermidis* and *S. aureus*, and suppress hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase and melanin formation, while also providing moisturizing benefits. The *Lactobacillus* fermentation significantly amplifies the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory effects of the *Dendropanax morbiferus* extract, and *Lactobacillus* components further contribute to skin health by stimulating beta-defensin production and supporting a healthy skin microbiome and barrier.

Key findings
- 01 In an in vitro study, the *Lactobacillus plantarum*-fermented *Dendropanax morbifera* leaf extract (DMF) demonstrated superior DPPH radical scavenging ability (SC50 value of 37.9 μg/ml) compared to its unfermented counterpart (52.6 μg/ml). It also effectively inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin production in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone-stimulated B16F10 cells at non-toxic concentrations.
- 02 A fermented *Dendropanax morbifera* bough extract, at a concentration of 200 mg/mL, showed strong antimicrobial effects against *Staphylococcus epidermidis* and *Staphylococcus aureus*, evidenced by inhibition zone diameters ranging from approximately 9.3 mm to 15.2 mm.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has assessed 'Lactobacillus Ferment Filtrate' and related Lactobacillus Ferment ingredients as safe for use in cosmetics. The highest reported concentration for a related ingredient ('Lactobacillus Ferment') in face and neck products was 5.6%. *Dendropanax morbiferus* extracts generally exhibit high biocompatibility with normal human skin cells, showing no significant toxicity and mitigating inflammatory dermatitis *in vivo* without adverse effects. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea recognizes *Dendropanax morbifera* components as food additives and traditional medicine. No genotoxicity was observed in Ames assays for related Lactobacillus Ferment ingredients.
