Mechanism of Action
This ingredient operates by creating a subtle, occlusive film on the skin's surface, which effectively minimizes transepidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby significantly improving skin hydration. This action intrinsically supports and strengthens the skin's natural barrier function. As an ester, Isohexyl Laurate also serves as an excellent solvent for other oil-soluble components within a formulation. It possesses the potential to enhance the dermal penetration of active ingredients through a temporary, reversible disruption of the organized lipid structure within the stratum corneum. Additionally, its lauric acid component is associated with antimicrobial properties, including the ability to inhibit *Cutibacterium acnes*, and may offer anti-inflammatory benefits.

Stability
Isohexyl Laurate is known for its excellent compatibility, seamlessly blending with a wide array of cosmetic ingredients such as other oils, waxes, and emollients without compromising product stability or efficacy. It does not significantly interfere with the absorption rates of active ingredients in formulations. This ester, similar to Hexyl Laurate, exhibits strong compatibility with silicones and can act as an effective solubilizer for UV absorbers, making it suitable for sunscreens. It is particularly well-suited for water-in-oil emulsions and anhydrous (water-free) product types. While photodegradation is less common for saturated esters, formulators should still consider proper storage away from direct light.
