Mechanism of Action
Alpha-ionone improves keratinocyte functions by activating the cAMP signaling pathway, leading to increased cell proliferation and migration. This process also enhances the production of hyaluronic acid (HA) and human β-defensin-2 (HBD-2), thereby accelerating epidermal barrier recovery. Beta-ionone acts as an antagonist to the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which helps to mitigate glucocorticoid-induced suppression of collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis in human dermal fibroblasts. Furthermore, alpha-ionone has been shown to increase collagen density, boost collagen gene expression, reduce matrix metalloproteinase genes, and suppress senescence markers in models of photoaging.

Ionones are soluble in most fixed oils, alcohol, and propylene glycol, but show very slight solubility or are insoluble in water and glycerin.
