Mechanism of Action
This extract functions as a powerful antioxidant, leveraging its rich composition of vitamins (C, B), betalains, flavonoids, and carotenoids to neutralize free radicals and mitigate oxidative stress and environmental damage. Its anti-inflammatory effects, primarily attributed to compounds like betalains, help soothe irritation and diminish redness. High water content and rehydrating capabilities significantly boost skin moisture and elasticity. Furthermore, it supports anti-aging by minimizing wrinkles and encouraging collagen production, enhances radiance, offers some UV protection, and acts as a prebiotic, fostering a healthier, more diverse skin microbiota and reducing pathogenic bacteria. It also reportedly aids in wound healing, re-epithelizing, and balancing oil for acne-prone skin.

Key findings
- 01 A cream formulation containing 1% Hylocereus undatus fruit extract demonstrated significant improvements in skin health. This included a 13% overall enhancement in skin microbiota diversity (with a notable 22% improvement in volunteers aged 45+), a 37% reduction in pathogenic Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum, a 4% decrease in redness and irritation, an 11% increase in skin resilience and radiance (measured by ITA), and a 13% reduction in Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), indicating a strengthened skin barrier. Reductions in visible wrinkles were also observed.
- 02 In a scrub cream formulation, a 5% concentration of red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) led to a substantial 29.4% increase in skin water content after four weeks of use.

Dusting Analysis
Clinical studies show demonstrable efficacy for various benefits at concentrations as low as 1% and significant hydration improvements at 5%. These percentages are well within the typical range for active ingredients, suggesting that low, ineffective concentrations are not commonly utilized.

Stability
Anthocyanins, key color pigments and beneficial compounds in some dragon fruit extracts (e.g., Hylocereus undatus skin extract), are more stable at 4°C with a pH of 4 and in the absence of light, retaining up to 80% of their pigment under these conditions.
Safety
Safety Profile
No specific CIR, SCCS, or FDA regulatory status was found. However, in vitro studies on Hylocereus costaricensis peel extract indicated no toxicity to normal cells. Animal studies using dragon fruit extract at high doses (1250 to 5000 mg/kg) showed no adverse interferences or abnormalities in organs, collectively suggesting a favorable safety profile.
