While insoluble in most non-polar organic solvents like chloroform, it can dissolve in specific polar organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and acetone, as well as in water-organic solvent mixtures.

Dermal irritation studies involving cellulose derivatives, including HPMC, showed them to be non-irritating to only slightly irritating at concentrations up to 100%. Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Stearoxy Ether is specifically deemed 'Irritant Free'. HPMC is also approved as a food additive by the FDA and EU, with an accepted daily oral dosage of 25 mg/kg.
