Mechanism of Action
This ingredient operates through several key mechanisms: it establishes a thin, protective film on the skin's surface, effectively reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and thereby preventing dehydration. Simultaneously, it functions as a humectant, drawing moisture from the environment into the stratum corneum for enhanced hydration. It actively reinforces the skin's barrier integrity, contributes to improved skin elasticity, and visibly refines skin texture. Additionally, it offers antioxidant protection by neutralizing free radicals, and supports optimal skin function by helping to regulate pH.

The Formula
Formulation
Stability
Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten exhibits high solubility in aqueous solutions, a characteristic improved by its hydrolysis process. Critical to its safe and effective formulation is ensuring the peptide molecular weight does not exceed 3500 Daltons (approximately 30 amino acids), preventing potential Type I hypersensitivity reactions.
Conflicts
- High molecular weight hydrolysates (greater than 3500 Da or 30 amino acids)
- Use on damaged or compromised skin
- Products that may come into contact with mucous membranes (e.g., eyes, airways)
- Products that may be incidentally inhaled
- Formulations with surfactants when high-MW polypeptides are present (potential to sensitize)
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten is safe for use in cosmetics when precisely formulated to restrict peptides to a weight-average molecular weight (MW) of 3500 Da or less. It is contraindicated for use on damaged skin or in products that may contact mucous membranes or be incidentally inhaled. While the FDA lists peptones, including this ingredient, as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for direct food substances, the SCCS has noted concerns regarding high molecular weight hydrolyzed wheat proteins in cosmetics, which have been linked to contact urticaria and anaphylactic shock. Properly formulated low molecular weight versions are not considered significant ocular or dermal irritants.
