HYDROLYZED CELLULOSE.

Valuable CAS - / DEODORANT, HAIR CONDITIONING, HAIR WAVING OR STRAIGHTENING

Hydrolyzed Cellulose is a water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose through a controlled hydrolysis process, yielding shorter glucose chains. In skincare, its primary utility lies in its dual function as a hydration-enhancing agent and a texture modifier.

Film-forming agent Humectant Viscosity increasing agent

Science

This ingredient forms a weightless, breathable film on the skin's surface, effectively reducing transepidermal water loss and thereby promoting sustained hydration. Concurrently, it acts as a humectant, attracting and binding atmospheric moisture to the stratum corneum. Within formulations, it also significantly contributes to viscosity control, ensuring optimal product consistency and spreadability.

Stability

Exhibits excellent stability within a neutral pH range (6-8) and generally maintains integrity between pH 6-9. Stability is acceptable in moderately acidic conditions (pH 3-6), but prolonged exposure below pH 4 or to strong alkaline conditions (above pH 10) may induce degradation. Optimal dispersion in cold water requires gradual addition with sufficient stirring to prevent clumping. High shear mixing should be avoided as it can compromise polymer structure. In formulations with high salt or electrolytic content, thinning effects can be mitigated by introducing Hydrolyzed Cellulose prior to such ingredients. Recommended general concentrations for similar derivatives range from 0.1% to 5%.

Conflicts

  • High concentrations of strong acids (e.g., AHAs, salicylic acid) or retinoids necessitate reduced concentrations (typically ≤0.5%) and thorough compatibility testing to prevent potential irritation.
  • Formulations with high salt or highly electrolytic content may experience viscosity reduction, manageable through optimized order of ingredient addition.
  • When combined with natural extracts or protein-based components, adequate preservation is critical to inhibit microbial growth.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has affirmed Hydrolyzed Cellulose as safe for cosmetic applications. Testing at concentrations up to 100% demonstrated minimal eye irritation and non-to-slightly irritating potential for the skin. Clinical assessments further confirmed it is neither sensitizing nor photosensitizing.
