Mechanism of Action
This advanced ferment functions by boosting cellular activity and stabilizing collagen mRNA through the regulation of RNA-binding protein HuR, which leads to enhanced collagen synthesis. It actively promotes the proliferation of dermal fibroblasts and significantly upregulates the gene expression of crucial extracellular matrix proteins, including Type I and Type III collagen, and elastin. As a powerful antioxidant, it scavenges free radicals and reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, thereby fortifying the skin's resilience against oxidative stress. Its moisturizing capabilities are attributed to the release of Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs) and increased expression of Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) and Hyaluronan Synthase 1 (HAS1), leading to superior skin hydration. The ingredient also reinforces the skin barrier by enhancing the expression of Filaggrin (FLG), Claudin-1 (CLDN1), Involucrin (IVL), and ZO-1. Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by protecting against chronic inflammation and downregulating inflammatory mediators, alongside a potential brightening effect through decreased melanin content. It is rich in beneficial compounds such as amino acids, organic acids, peptides, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and vitamins.

Key findings
- 01 An 8-week human clinical study showed that application of a Rice Fermentation Filtrate (RFF)-containing face cream significantly reduced wrinkle area and length around the eyes, simultaneously enhancing skin firmness and smoothness.
- 02 In an in vitro study, 0.25% Yeast/Rice Fermentation Filtrate (RFF) combined with 0.25% Sialic Acid (SA) led to a 198% increase in collagen synthesis compared to 0.5% RFF alone.
- 03 Red Rice Aspergillus Ferment Filtrate (RRFA) at 3% significantly increased mRNA levels of Type I Collagen (COL1) by 17%, Type III Collagen (COL3) by 47%, and elastin by 159% in dermal fibroblasts.
- 04 RRFA at 1.25% and 3% effectively inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in UVA-irradiated dermal fibroblasts by 60.82% and 63.04%, respectively.
- 05 RRFA at 3% significantly increased Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) protein content by 71% and Filaggrin (FLG) protein content by 51% in human keratinocytes.
- 06 RRFA at 1.25% significantly boosted water content in a 3D epidermal skin model by 26.93%.
- 07 RRFA at 0.0142% and 0.07815% significantly decreased melanin content in human melanocytes by 18.38% and 17.40%, respectively.
- 08 Rice Ferment Filtrate demonstrates antioxidant activity with a DPPH inhibition rate of at least 40%, and Brown Rice Ferment Filtrate shows a free radical scavenging rate as high as 45%.

Formulation
Stability
This ingredient should be incorporated into the aqueous phase of formulations. For emulsions, it is best added post-emulsification at temperatures below 40°C (104°F). Specific optimal pH ranges for cosmetic formulation stability were not identified, although research indicates that higher concentrations do not consistently correlate with increased efficacy for all benefits.
Safety
Safety Profile
Generally considered safe for topical application. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not specifically reviewed 'HYDROLYZED ASPERGILLUS/RICE FERMENT FILTRATE'; however, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates 'Aspergillus/Rice Ferment Filtrate' with low concerns for cancer, allergies, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Related ingredients are also classified by SkinSAFE as '100 Free,' 'Irritant Free,' and 'Fragrance Free,' suggesting a favorable safety profile, even for sensitive skin. Individuals with known allergies or particularly sensitive skin should nonetheless exercise caution.
