Science

Functioning as an occlusive skin conditioning agent, Hydrogenated Rice Bran Wax creates a protective barrier on the skin's surface. This barrier effectively minimizes transepidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby locking in moisture to promote enhanced hydration and softness. Beyond its crucial role in barrier support, it actively helps shield the skin from various environmental stressors. The ingredient also exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which can aid in calming irritated skin, reducing redness, and potentially assist in managing conditions such as acne and rosacea. Its inherent biologically active components, including antioxidants and phytosterols, work to neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammatory mediators, thus contributing to comprehensive skin barrier repair.

Stability

Hydrogenated Rice Bran Wax demonstrates high thermal stability, with a melting point typically ranging from 75-86°C. This characteristic contributes to its robustness in cosmetic formulations, where it acts as a thickening and stabilizing agent, imparting a smooth, creamy texture. The wax is also noted for its resistance to rancidity, enhancing product shelf-life and consistency.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Hydrogenated Rice Bran Wax is safe as a cosmetic ingredient under current practices of use and concentration. Dermal irritation and sensitization tests did not indicate toxicity, and clinical studies observed at most mild irritation from related rice oils, fatty acids, and waxes. While no specific maximum concentration is reported for Hydrogenated Rice Bran Wax in cosmetics, concentrations up to 10% have been mentioned for related rice bran wax in formulations. The FDA permits Rice Bran Wax in food and lists it as an indirect food additive, generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for food use up to 3% for closely related substances. Toxicity studies indicate very low acute, subchronic, and chronic toxicity. The CIR Panel advises that trace amounts of pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in rice-derived ingredients should not exceed currently reported levels.
