Mechanism of Action
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB) operates as an organic UV filter primarily by absorbing ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation across the 320-400 nm range, with a precise peak absorption at 354 nm. This absorbed energy is efficiently converted into thermal energy, establishing an imperceptible protective barrier within the superficial skin layers. Furthermore, DHHB provides potent antioxidant defense through the neutralization of UV-induced free radicals, and in preclinical in vitro studies, it has demonstrated an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting edema formation.

Stability
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB) exhibits excellent photostability, ensuring its chemical integrity and functional performance are maintained under UV exposure without significant degradation. As an oil-soluble filter, it integrates smoothly into the oil phase of emulsion-based formulations. It is compatible with other UV absorbers, contributing to formulation stability and extending product shelf-life by preventing light-induced deterioration. DHHB is known for its non-greasy, light texture and does not leave a white residue.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) and its successor, the SCCS, deemed Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (DHHB) safe for use as a UV filter in cosmetic products at concentrations up to 10% in the EU, a limit that remains current. In the United States, DHHB is not approved as an active sunscreen ingredient under FDA regulations for over-the-counter drugs; however, it is permissible for cosmetic product protection as a light stabilizer. Concerns regarding potential di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHexP) contamination led the SCCS to recommend a maximal level of 1 ppm for this unavoidable trace impurity. Overall, DHHB is considered safe for cosmetic application, presenting a low probability of skin irritation or allergic reactions.
