Hexetidine exerts its broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect by primarily disrupting microbial cell membranes through electrostatic interactions, leading to increased permeability and eventual cell lysis. It further interferes with essential microbial metabolic pathways, including mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and ATP synthesis, thereby inhibiting cellular function and growth. It also affects microbial virulence factors like adhesion and biofilm formation.
