GLYCOL CETEARATE.

Valuable / EMULSION STABILISING, LIGHT STABILIZER, SKIN CONDITIONING, SKIN CONDITIONING - EMOLLIENT, SURFACTANT - EMULSIFYING

Glycol Cetearate is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient that conditions the skin and optimizes product formulations. It supports skin hydration by forming a lightweight, breathable barrier and enhances product consistency and texture.

Emollient Emulsifying Emulsion Stabilizing Skin Conditioning Light Stabilizer Viscosity Controlling Opacifying

Science

On the skin, Glycol Cetearate acts as an emollient, establishing a light, breathable barrier that effectively minimizes trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby promoting optimal skin hydration without an occlusive sensation. It also refines skin texture, contributing to a smooth and soft feel. Within formulations, it functions as an emulsifying and emulsion-stabilizing agent, preventing the separation of oil and water phases, imparting viscosity control, and ensuring a non-greasy, smooth spreadability. Furthermore, it serves as an opacifying and light-stabilizing component.

Stability

Glycol Cetearate exhibits robust stability across various pH ranges and temperature conditions, which is crucial for maintaining overall product consistency. To achieve a pearlescent effect, it must be heated to at least 70-75°C (167 F) until fully melted and finely dispersed, followed by continuous agitation during the cooling phase. Excessive usage can diminish pearlescence due to increased opacity, whereas insufficient levels may lead to solubilization by surfactants, resulting in a hazy or non-pearlescent final product.

The CIR Expert Panel concluded that Glycol Cetearate, along with related ingredients like Glycol Stearate, Glycol Stearate SE, and Glycol Distearate, is safe for cosmetic use under current practices and concentrations, a finding reaffirmed in 2022. Human studies evaluating formulations containing related Glycol Stearate at concentrations of 2% to 5% reported no skin irritation or sensitization. Animal data for these related compounds similarly indicated low acute toxicity and non-irritating to slightly irritating potential. The maximum reported use concentration for related Glycol Stearate was 5% in 2022. The FDA also considers Glycol Stearate safe for cosmetic applications.
