Historically, it has been used at concentrations up to 7% in hair tonics. While undiluted glyceryl monoesters may cause minor irritation, particularly on abraded skin, they are generally not irritating at concentrations typically found in cosmetic products. Related compounds are also affirmed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for certain food applications. It is not considered a sensitizer unless specific contaminants like residual rosin are present.
