Mechanism of Action
As a phytoestrogen, Genistein primarily binds to estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), influencing skin health. It functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and shielding DNA from oxidative and photodamage. Genistein modulates inflammatory pathways by altering pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (e.g., TNF-α via NF-κB) and enhances the skin's natural antioxidant defenses. It inhibits tyrosine protein kinase, an enzyme implicated in collagen and elastin degradation, while simultaneously stimulating the production of type I and type III collagen and hyaluronic acid within the extracellular matrix. This contributes to anti-aging and improved hydration. Furthermore, Genistein offers photoprotection by downregulating UVB-activated signal transduction and counters matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by elevating tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP) protein levels, thereby reducing collagen breakdown.
