Mechanism of Action
This extract blend operates synergistically as a film-forming agent, humectant, and skin conditioning agent, enhancing the skin's protective capabilities and influencing product viscosity. Gelidium Cartilagineum Extract specifically bolsters the skin's natural protective barrier, safeguarding against external irritants like pollution and temperature fluctuations, thereby preventing dehydration and fostering resilience. Its bioactive components also promote skin regeneration and may help mitigate inflammation. Gracilaria verrucosa extract delivers significant antioxidant activity through its phenolic compounds, alongside anti-aging effects by inhibiting collagenase, elastase, and tyrosinase, and exhibits antibacterial properties. Porphyra yezoensis complements this by supplying essential proteins, minerals, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and polysaccharides, which collectively revitalize the skin, stimulate blood circulation, and accelerate cell renewal.

Stability
Algae extracts are known to be highly hygroscopic. For optimal extraction of various compounds, including water-soluble components and phenolic compounds more readily soluble in polar organic solvents, a blend of water and organic solvents is beneficial for Gracilaria species.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Panel, in its 2021 review of red algae-derived ingredients, classified Gelidium Cartilagineum Extract, Gracilaria Verrucosa Extract, and Porphyra Yezoensis Extract among those with 'insufficient data' for a definitive 'safe as used' conclusion for the blend. However, cytotoxicity evaluations for 'Plocamium cartilagineum extract' (equivalent to Gelidium cartilagineum extract) showed no toxicity at the highest tested concentration in rat skeletal myoblasts. Similarly, Gracilaria verrucosa extract (or Gracilariopsis longissima extract equivalent) demonstrated no cytotoxicity in human gingival fibroblasts or immortalized human keratinocytes at concentrations up to 10 mg/mL.

Verdict
This red algae extract blend offers significant hydration, barrier reinforcement, and a spectrum of anti-aging and antioxidant benefits, particularly suitable for dry and sensitive skin, despite the CIR Panel's current 'insufficient data' safety classification for the blend.
