Science

This extract combats oxidative stress through a rich profile of flavonoids, phenolic acids, ellagitannins, and proanthocyanidins, including protection against UVA-induced free radical damage. Its antimelanogenic action stems from inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme crucial for melanin synthesis, partly by quenching copper ions. Tannins contribute to an astringent effect, refining skin texture and minimizing the appearance of pores, while compounds like agrimoniin confer anti-inflammatory benefits against UVB exposure. Saccharides and ellagic acid also provide hydration and soothing properties.

Key findings

  1. 01 When formulated into a hydrogel, it demonstrated antioxidant activity, good cutaneous compatibility, and stability for topical application.
  2. 02 Exhibited significant tyrosinase inhibitory activity, indicating potential for reducing melanin synthesis.
  3. 03 Showed notable photoprotective effects in human dermal fibroblasts, enhancing cell viability in a dose-dependent manner.
  4. 04 An ethanolic extract induced a 31% and 40% inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) decrease, respectively, at non-cytotoxic concentrations, suggesting anti-inflammatory activity.

Stability

A hydrogel formulation remained stable for 28 days under various storage conditions. However, susceptibility to light was observed, leading to browning with sun exposure and darkening with increased fluidity at 40°C. While pH decreased across conditions, it consistently stayed within the skin-compatible range of 4.5-6.5.

Sensitization risk Low

A hydrogel formulation containing 2% (w/w) Fragaria Vesca Leaf Extract demonstrated good skin compatibility in patch tests on 10 volunteers and repeated application tests (HRIPT) on 50 volunteers, showing no irritant reactions. Although the raw extract at a high concentration (2 mg/mL) exhibited cytotoxicity to HaCaT cells, the formulated version did not harm keratinocytes, confirming its suitability for topical use. Closely related Fragaria Vesca Fruit Extract is considered safe with low irritation and sensitization potential, and is not phototoxic. The extract has also been classified as 'safe (Class 1)' with no expected clinically relevant interactions.
