Mechanism of Action
Etlingera Elatior Extract exerts its comprehensive skin benefits through a rich array of secondary metabolites, including phenols, flavonoids, and terpenoids. It functions as a powerful antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species and enhancing endogenous antioxidant defenses. For anti-aging, it inhibits collagenase activity while stimulating Type I collagen production and visibly reducing wrinkles. Its depigmenting action stems from its ability to suppress tyrosinase, thereby inhibiting melanin synthesis and minimizing hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, the extract offers significant anti-inflammatory effects by down-regulating pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, in addition to promoting wound healing and possessing antimicrobial capabilities.

Safety Profile
Etlingera Elatior Extract demonstrated non-toxicity in a brine shrimp study (LC50 value of 2.52 mg/ml) and elicited no irritation reactions in human volunteer studies using a whitening cream. In cell-based studies, freeze-dried extracts were safe on fibroblast and monocyte cells at concentrations up to 0.1% (1000 μg/mL). However, very high concentrations (5-10%) were associated with potential drawbacks, such as delayed inflammatory response and reduced collagen density, possibly due to the astringent effects of high tannin content leading to skin dehydration.
