Mechanism of Action
This self-regenerating synthetic molecule operates by efficiently dismutating superoxide anions and neutralizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), converting these reactive oxygen species into harmless water and oxygen. By mimicking natural antioxidant enzymes, EUK-134 significantly reduces oxidative stress on the skin, protecting against free radical damage, DNA damage, and reducing erythema. It also plays a role in preventing premature aging and photoaging by inhibiting MMP-2, which helps preserve the extracellular matrix (ECM) network. Furthermore, it protects cells from UVB-induced oxidative damage, mitigating MAPK signaling and p53 accumulation, thereby increasing cell survival after UVB irradiation.
Research
Clinical Evidence
High confidence0.1%
Key findings
- 01 Clinical studies involving human volunteers demonstrated that concentrations between 0.01% and 0.1% reduced skin surface lipid peroxidation in UVA-exposed skin, even when applied after exposure.
- 02 In vivo applications lowered hydroperoxide levels on the surface of UVA-exposed skin.
- 03 A 0.1% concentration was shown to protect cells from UVB damage, reduce oxidative stress-induced MAPK signaling, decrease p53 induction, and significantly enhance cell survival following UVB irradiation.
- 04 Formulations at 0.1% support the skin's defense against environmental stressors and are well-tolerated by various skin types, including sensitive skin.

Dusting Analysis
Given its potent efficacy at concentrations as low as 0.01%, ETHYLBISIMINOMETHYLGUAIACOL MANGANESE CHLORIDE is typically included at functional percentages to deliver significant benefits and is not commonly associated with ingredient dusting.
The Formula
Formulation
Stability
EUK-134 maintains optimal stability within a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0. However, the presence of water can impair its stability, which is why many high-efficacy formulations utilize anhydrous (water-free) bases to preserve its potency.
Conflicts
- Highly acidic formulations (e.g., direct Vitamin C suspensions)
- Copper Peptides
- Direct Acids (e.g., AHAs, BHAs)
- Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid
Safety
Safety Profile
While formal CIR, SCCS, or FDA review status is not explicitly documented, products containing EUK-134 at 0.1% are widely available and marketed. SkinSAFE considers these formulations hypoallergenic and free from many common allergy-causing ingredients, suggesting a favorable safety profile in practical cosmetic applications.
