Equol acts as a powerful oil-soluble antioxidant, engaging with specific receptor sites on the skin to promote a more youthful and refined look. It effectively intervenes in processes that lead to diminished skin density and suppleness, while enhancing the skin's intrinsic antioxidant protection, which typically weakens with age and sun exposure. Its multifaceted action involves binding to estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) on keratinocytes and fibroblasts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). Additionally, it functions as an anti-androgen by selectively binding 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT), thereby preventing its interaction with the androgen receptor. Equol stimulates the synthesis of critical proteins such as collagen, elastin, and TIMP-1, concurrently inhibiting matrix metalloproteinases and elastase, which are enzymes responsible for degrading the extracellular matrix. It also boosts Nrf2 production, a transcription factor vital for antioxidant protein synthesis.
