Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is inherently unstable, prone to rapid degradation in aqueous solutions through oxidation and autoxidation. Its stability is highly dependent on pH, with rapid degradation occurring above a pH of 5 to 7. Exposure to light, heat, dissolved oxygen, and metal ions also significantly diminishes its purity and efficacy, with substantial degradation observed even at room temperature and up to 85% loss after 1 hour of UV exposure. Optimal stability is achieved within a pH range of 3.5-4.5 and by storing the ingredient at 2-8°C. The incorporation of stabilizers and/or encapsulation techniques is strongly recommended to preserve its integrity and performance.

Information pertaining to general Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) suggests it is not genotoxic. While raw EGCG carries GHS hazard statements for potential allergic skin reactions and serious eye irritation, a cream formulation containing EGCG at 6% concentration exhibited no irritation in albino rabbit skin tests, nor did it induce hypersensitivity reactions or erythema in human patch tests. Concentrations of EGCG at 7% and 10% were, however, noted to potentially lead to toxicity in rabbit studies.
