Mechanism of Action
As an anionic surfactant, Disodium Oleth-3 Sulfosuccinate functions by significantly lowering the surface tension of liquids, thereby trapping dirt, oil, and other impurities for efficient rinsing. It also acts as an emulsifier to stabilize oil and water phases within formulations. Furthermore, it enhances and stabilizes foam, creating a rich lather. Its larger molecular weight is believed to limit skin penetration, reducing the potential for irritation compared to smaller surfactant molecules.

Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that Disodium Oleth-3 Sulfosuccinate, as part of the Alkyl PEG Sulfosuccinates group, is safe for use at concentrations up to 10% in rinse-off products, provided formulations are non-irritating. This assessment is largely based on data for related sulfosuccinates. While there is a potential for ocular or skin irritation if not properly formulated, the ingredient is not associated with sensitization. Trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of ethoxylation, may be present.
