Mechanism of Action
At a molecular level, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate intervenes in key inflammatory pathways by inhibiting mediators such as prostaglandins and histamine, thereby dampening signals that lead to redness and discomfort. It specifically blocks nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, a crucial regulator of inflammation-causing genes, and reduces the activity of phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase. Furthermore, it helps regulate sebum production to prevent clogged pores and can inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme central to melanin synthesis, which assists in diminishing dark spots. Its action extends to preserving skin's hyaluronic acid and moderating cortisol breakdown, further contributing to its calming effect.

Stability
Optimal pH for stability generally ranges between 4.0 and 8.0. It requires storage in a dark and dry environment at 10°C to 25°C, with temperatures above 60°C to be avoided. Its hygroscopic nature and mild electrolyte properties may contribute to a slight liquefaction in some formulations.

Safety
Safety Profile
The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has determined Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate to be safe for cosmetic use. It is widely considered non-irritating and non-sensitizing, and generally well-tolerated across all skin types. However, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) recommends its use in dermal cosmetic products at concentrations no more than 0.2% and advises against its inclusion in topical products intended for the eye. The ingredient is also noted to be poorly absorbed through the skin.
