Flavonoids deliver robust antioxidant protection against oxidative stress. Saponins further contribute to anti-inflammatory effects by modulating inflammatory pathways and can also enhance the penetration of other active ingredients. Due to potential hormone interactions, it is advised that individuals with conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or certain forms of cancer, as well as children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with protein S deficiency, avoid products containing this ingredient. The FDA has not assessed wild yam root for safety or efficacy. Manufacturers are advised to ensure pesticide residues do not exceed 40 ppm (with no single residue above 10 ppm) and to ensure diosgenin content is within an expected upper limit of 3.5% for consistent safety profiles. In 2022, the maximum reported use concentration in non-spray moisturizing products was 0.3%.
