Mechanism of Action
DIMETHICONE/VINYLTRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE CROSSPOLYMER functions by forming a lightweight, imperceptible film on the skin's surface. This film provides a barrier against environmental aggressors and effectively minimizes transepidermal water loss, contributing to enhanced skin hydration. Mechanistically, it also acts as a sophisticated texturizer, improving the smooth spreadability and luxurious feel of formulations. Furthermore, its oil-absorbing capabilities provide a mattifying effect, while its light-diffusing properties create a 'soft focus' visual improvement, blurring minor imperfections. In formulation, it increases viscosity in non-aqueous systems and aids in emulsion stabilization.

Stability
This ingredient is typically supplied as swollen gels in silicone oils, designed to enhance viscosity in non-aqueous formulations. It can be incorporated into the aqueous phase if finely dispersed as a powder suspension, with moderate shear recommended for optimal mixing. To achieve an elegant silky and powdery skin feel, formulators should consider co-formulating with volatile cyclosiloxanes and low viscosity silicone oils, while minimizing high viscosity greases. It also serves as an effective emulsion stabilizer.

Safety
Safety Profile
Extensively evaluated by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel and the FDA, this crosspolymer is deemed safe for topical application. Its large molecular structure precludes skin penetration, thereby preventing systemic absorption. It carries a very low hazard rating from EWG, with comprehensive dermal irritation and sensitization studies showing no adverse effects even at concentrations exceeding 45% (for a similar dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer). It is certified free from heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organohalogen compounds, and nitrosamines. Note that while up to 46% is safe in powder products, concentrations typically reach up to 20% in spray applications.
