Mechanism of Action
This ingredient operates by forming a flexible film on the skin's surface and acting as a plasticizer, derived from the free radical polymerization of PEG-8 Dimethicone esterified with acrylic acid. Its PEG-8 Dimethicone component serves as an emollient, imparting a desirable silky texture to formulations and improving their application. Concurrently, it establishes a protective barrier that effectively minimizes transepidermal water loss, preventing dehydration and enhancing the skin's tactile quality. Additionally, it exhibits properties as a cleansing agent.

Stability
For optimal formulation stability, the functional pH range for its PEG-8 dimethicone component is between 5.5 and 8.5. At 1% active concentration, approximately 20% of PEG-8 dimethicone hydrolyzes in 45 days at pH 5 and in 86 days at pH 8. Stability is enhanced with higher molecular weights (exceeding 10,000) and increased concentrations (from 1% to 5%). It should be incorporated into the water phase of formulations and must not be heated above 50°C (125°F). Alternatively, it can be added to emulsions after the temperature has cooled to 50°C (125°F).
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that ingredients within the dimethicone crosspolymer category, including Dimethicone PEG-8 Polyacrylate, are safe under current conditions of use and concentration. Specifically, a concentration range of 0.024% to 5.6% for PEG-8 dimethicone has been determined safe for cosmetic applications. The EWG assesses Dimethicone PEG-8 Polyacrylate with low concerns for cancer, allergies, immunotoxicity, and developmental/reproductive toxicity. However, its safety score may be elevated in inhalable product forms (e.g., sprays, powders) due to potential respiratory concerns, or in cases of contamination by toxic impurities.
