Optimal stability is observed within a functional pH range of 5.5 to 8.5. Hydrolysis rates are dependent on both pH and active concentration; for example, at pH 5 and 1% active, approximately 20% hydrolysis occurs within 45 days, while at pH 8 and 5% active, the same degree of hydrolysis takes roughly 165 days. It must be incorporated into the water phase of formulations and should not be heated above 50°C (122°F/125°F). When formulating emulsions, DIMETHICONE PEG-8 OLIVATE should be blended in once the temperature has dropped below 50°C.

Although a direct Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) assessment specifically for DIMETHICONE PEG-8 OLIVATE was not identified, its close chemical relative, PEG-8 Dimethicone, was reviewed by the CIR Expert Panel in 2014 and deemed safe for cosmetic applications at concentrations up to 5.6%.
