Mechanism of Action
As an ester derived from PEG-8 Dimethicone, this ingredient operates by forming a water-soluble silicone film on the skin's surface. This barrier effectively minimizes transepidermal water loss, promoting enhanced hydration and a desirable smooth, silky texture with improved slip. It actively softens skin and hair, and within formulations, it acts as an oil-in-water emulsifier, enhancing overall texture and reducing stickiness.

Stability
This ingredient maintains optimal stability within a functional pH range of 5.5 to 8.5. Stability can be enhanced at higher concentrations, such as from 1% to 5%, and with higher molecular weights exceeding 10,000. It is crucial not to heat the ingredient above 50°C (125°F) if added to the water phase; for emulsion formulations, it should be incorporated only after the temperature has cooled to below 50°C.

Safety Profile
While a direct Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) assessment for DIMETHICONE PEG-8 BORAGEATE is not available, its primary structural component, PEG-8 Dimethicone, was deemed safe for cosmetic use in a 2014 CIR assessment at concentrations ranging from 0.024% to 5.6%. A broader 2022 CIR review affirmed the safety of dimethicone and related polymers in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating. However, data is insufficient regarding its safety for use in products applied via airbrush, where incidental inhalation may occur.
