Mechanism of Action
This innovative amphiphilic silicone primarily acts by forming a weightless, protective film upon the skin's surface, which significantly reduces transepidermal water loss, thereby enhancing skin hydration. As an emollient, it meticulously improves the skin's cushion, texture, and imparts an elegant slip to formulations. Furthermore, it contributes to a smoother skin appearance by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, while simultaneously delivering a desirable matte finish and reducing formulation tackiness.

Stability
This ingredient is water-soluble and maintains stability within a functional pH range of 5.5 to 8.5. For optimal integrity, it should be added to the water phase of formulations and not heated above 50°C (125°F); in emulsions, it should be incorporated after cooling to below 50°C. Hydrolysis studies on a related compound showed 20% degradation at 1% active after 45 days at pH 5, extending to 86 days at pH 8.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has consistently affirmed the safety of Dimethicone PEG-8 Benzoate, along with other dimethicone copolyols, for cosmetic use under current practices. This conclusion was reconfirmed in 2013/2014 and further supported in a 2019 updated assessment for substituted-methicone polymers, emphasizing safety when formulated to be non-irritating. While a specific maximum safe concentration for Dimethicone PEG-8 Benzoate was not individually established, a related compound, PEG-8 dimethicone, was deemed safe up to 5.6%. The CIR did note insufficient data to determine safety for incidental inhalation in airbrush applications for the broader polymer group.
