Science

As a complex polysaccharide, Dextran operates by attracting and retaining moisture, critically improving skin hydration and strengthening the skin's natural barrier to reduce transepidermal water loss. Its anti-inflammatory capabilities help to calm irritated skin and diminish redness. Furthermore, Dextran contributes to anti-aging by promoting skin elasticity and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, potentially through stimulating natural cellular processes and supporting the extracellular matrix. It also fosters cell growth, aids tissue regeneration, helps balance skin microbiota, and boosts microcirculation for improved oxygen and nutrient absorption, resulting in a more radiant complexion.

Key findings

  1. 01 A clinical study demonstrated that medical dextran tincture notably improved skin moisture retention, gloss, collagen density, and elasticity. It also reduced skin retraction time and mitigated skin redness and overall facial photoaging, surpassing the effects observed with medical hyaluronic acid gel.
  2. 02 Research indicates that when incorporated into cosmetic formulas containing weak carboxylic acids at concentrations between 0.5% and 20% (preferably 1-15%, most preferably 1-10%), Dextran effectively lessens irritation from these acids and augments their anti-aging benefits, including collagen synthesis and keratinocyte differentiation, leading to enhanced appearance of aged, photoaged, dry, lined, or wrinkled skin.

Stability

Dextran solutions maintain stability over prolonged periods at ambient temperatures within a pH range of 4.0 to 10.0, with an ideal storage pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It is susceptible to degradation at high temperatures, which can decrease molecular weight and viscosity. Extreme acidic pH can induce hydrolysis, while highly alkaline conditions may lead to oxidation and degradation. Exposure to irradiation should be avoided due to potential degradation, and while autoclaving can cause slight pH decrease and yellowing, it generally does not impair performance.

Synergies

  • Weak carboxylic acids (for enhanced anti-aging efficacy and reduced irritation)

Conflicts

  • High temperatures
  • Extreme acidic conditions (below pH 4.0)
  • Extreme alkaline conditions (above pH 10.0)
  • Irradiation

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) deems Dextran 'safe as used' in cosmetics. It holds a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) classification from the US FDA and is permitted under the European Union Cosmetics Regulation. Dextran exhibits an excellent safety profile, is considered non-allergenic, and rarely precipitates adverse reactions, though individual sensitivities to polysaccharides are always possible.
