Mechanism of Action
Rich in phytochemicals such as flavonoids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, and tannins, this extract functions by directly scavenging various free radicals like DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radicals, leading to a substantial reduction in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). It also enhances the production of endogenous antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH). The active compounds are believed to impart anti-inflammatory effects and may aid in stabilizing cell membranes, potentially mitigating allergic responses.

Key findings
- 01 Demonstrated an 83.2% ± 6.21% reduction in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mouse granulocytes treated with hydrogen peroxide.
- 02 Significantly improved the viability of pig kidney (LLC-PK1) cells when exposed to glucose-induced oxidative stress.
- 03 Found to be safe for human liver (HEPG2) and pig kidney (LLC-PK1) cells in vitro, showing no alteration in viability or LDH release.

Stability
Aqueous extracts have been reported to maintain stability for 24 hours when stored at 4°C. For optimal stability, botanical extracts should generally be stored away from light, heat, and humidity.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not evaluated DESMODIUM ADSCENDENS FLOWER/LEAF/STEM EXTRACT. It is not listed with reported uses in the FDA’s Voluntary Cosmetics Reporting Program. In vitro studies indicated safety for liver and kidney cells at 1 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL; however, a concentration of 100 mg/mL resulted in a significant 40% decrease in cell viability, suggesting potential toxicity at high doses. The acute oral LD50 in rats (1122-1342.32 mg/kg body weight) indicates relatively low acute oral toxicity. A single case of acute hepatotoxicity was associated with Desmodium extract alongside five other medicinal drugs, preventing a clear causal link to the extract alone.
