The moisturizing action of Damnacanthus Major Callus involves the upregulation of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2) and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in artificial skin models. Its antioxidant efficacy is linked to the upregulation of phospho-NFκB repressing factor in human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). Furthermore, the callus naturally contains anthraquinone compounds, such as rubiadin, which are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potentially skin-brightening properties.
