Cysteine primarily enhances skin health through its antioxidant capabilities, acting as a crucial precursor to glutathione, a powerful endogenous antioxidant. Glutathione effectively neutralizes free radicals and mitigates oxidative stress, safeguarding skin from environmental damage. Furthermore, Cysteine is essential for the biosynthesis of keratin, a key structural protein in the skin, which promotes healing and regeneration. Regarding skin brightening, Cysteine influences melanin pathways by reducing the synthesis of darker eumelanin and promoting the production of lighter pheomelanin, while also directly inhibiting tyrosinase activity. It also contributes to reducing inflammation and supporting collagen production. Due to its unique sulfide group, Cysteine is also utilized as a reducing agent in various cosmetic formulations.
