Mechanism of Action
This extract is rich in chlorogenic acids, which effectively chelate metallic ions like iron to detoxify cells and mitigate inflammatory reactions, thereby acting as an anti-polluting, anti-inflammatory, and anti-irritating agent. Its potent blend of bioactive antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoids—including Vitexin, Oligomeric Procyanidins, Hyperoside, and Quercetin—protects skin cells (keratinocytes and fibroblasts) from UV-induced damage and oxidative stress. It prevents skin photoaging, preserves collagen synthesis by shielding fibroblasts, and enhances type I procollagen production. Additionally, the extract possesses antimicrobial properties, effective against streptococcal dermal infections, improves microcirculation within the skin, and enhances skin hydration.

Stability
When carried in corn sugar-derived propanediol, the liquid extract demonstrates enhanced clarity and stability in formulations. Formulations incorporating shea butter were effective in releasing hawthorn active compounds (41.4-42.4%).
Synergies
- Ginseng extract (demonstrated improved efficacy when combined in a topical cream for photodamaged skin)
Conflicts
- Beeswax (hinders the effective release of active compounds)
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has not formally reviewed Crataegus Oxyacantha Extract. EWG Skin Deep rates Crataegus Oxyacantha Stem Extract as a 'LOW' concern for cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, and developmental & reproductive toxicity. However, one animal study noted that very high oral doses (2000mg/kg) of aqueous hawthorn leaf extracts showed cytotoxic, genotoxic, and teratogenic effects in rats, advising against its oral administration during pregnancy. While this pertains to high oral doses in animals, its potential teratogenic effect warrants a cautious approach regarding use during human pregnancy, particularly in topical applications where systemic absorption could be a concern.
