Mechanism of Action
The copper component acts as a crucial enzymatic cofactor for lysyl oxidase, a key enzyme involved in the synthesis of structural proteins such as collagen and elastin, thereby promoting skin firmness and flexibility. It further stimulates fibroblasts, the dermal cells responsible for producing these vital proteins. Copper also provides antioxidant protection by activating superoxide dismutase (SOD) to neutralize free radicals and supports the wound healing process by enhancing collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, as well as promoting angiogenesis. Derivatives like Copper PCA may offer seboregulating and antibacterial properties through potential 5-α-reductase inhibition. Concurrently, the aluminum silicate functions primarily as an effective oil absorbent, helping to control shine and reduce excess sebum. It contributes to mild exfoliation by assisting in the removal of dead skin cells and impurities. In formulations, it serves as a thickening agent, texture enhancer, and opacifying agent, facilitating the suspension of non-soluble particles and preventing clumping.

Stability
Copper compounds, including copper peptides, are sensitive to low pH environments. Strong acids and potent antioxidants such as ascorbic acid can destabilize them or reduce their efficacy. Copper oxide particles are largely non-soluble in aqueous solutions with a pH of 5.5 and above.
Conflicts
- strong acids
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel has deemed Aluminum Silicate and related silicates safe for use in cosmetic formulations, with a cautionary note for spray products to minimize inhalation. The SCCS generally concludes that dermal absorption of aluminum from insoluble cosmetic products is minimal.
