The resin oil primarily functions as an anti-inflammatory agent, largely due to its high content of sesquiterpenes, notably β-caryophyllene. This compound modulates the immune system to decrease the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing skin inflammation. β-caryophyllene also interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin, potentially increasing beta-endorphin synthesis. Developmental toxicity studies in pregnant Wistar rats indicated a non-embryotoxic and safe maternal oral exposure level of 500 mg/kg/day; however, for females of reproductive age, the estimated safe oral exposure level for humans is considerably lower at 5 mg/kg/day, warranting caution for internal use during pregnancy.
