While milk proteins are known food allergens, studies reviewed indicated no relevant ocular irritation or dermal irritation/sensitization in animals and human subjects from cosmetic use, suggesting Type I immediate hypersensitivity reactions are unlikely. However, one rare case of anaphylaxis following cutaneous exposure to a bovine colostrum-based cream has been reported. The FDA primarily issues warning letters for ingested colostrum products making unapproved drug claims, rather than for topical cosmetic use.
