Science

This essential oil exerts its effects through several key pathways. Bioactive compounds like limonene and myrcene provide robust antioxidant defense by scavenging free radicals, and exhibit pronounced antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains. Its monoterpene content contributes to anti-inflammatory action, soothing skin. Furthermore, it aids in regulating sebum secretion and promoting healthy cellular regeneration and cell renewal. Rich in Vitamin C, the oil supports collagen synthesis, assists in wound healing, and enhances skin luminosity. It also demonstrates anti-aging capabilities by inhibiting enzymes such as hyaluronidase, collagenase, and amylase. Its astringent qualities help to refine pores, and high limonene levels may offer environmental protection against pollution, smoke, and UV rays.

Key findings

  1. 01 Demonstrated high DPPH radical scavenging activity (EC50 86.17 ± 4.87 mg/mL) and ABTS radical scavenging activity (EC50 0.16 ± 0.06 mg/mL), indicating potent antioxidant properties.
  2. 02 Exhibits pronounced antibacterial effects against various bacterial strains within a concentration range of 16–256 μg/mL (MIC range), with limonene showing activity as low as 4–16 μg/mL. A 2% essential oil nanoemulsion effectively inhibited Listeria monocytogenes.
  3. 03 Shows significant inhibitory activity against key enzymes related to skin aging: hyaluronidase (IC50 2.19 ± 0.10 µg/mL), collagenase (IC50 592.1 ± 30.1 µg/mL), and amylase (0.79 ± 0.04% inhibition).

Stability

Insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol and propylene glycol. For optimal stability, essential oils should be incorporated during the cool-down phase of formulation, avoiding heat when possible. Store in a cool, dark, and dry place. Mandarin peel essential oil typically has a shelf life of one to two years.

Conflicts

  • Sun exposure (due to photosensitizing furocoumarins like 5-methoxypsoralen, caution is advised, especially in daytime products)
  • High concentrations for direct skin application (due to allergenic molecules like limonene and linalool that can cause irritation and itching; should be diluted with a carrier oil)
  • Formulations exceeding 0.0015% (15 ppm) 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) in leave-on products

Safety

CIR Status
Safe with restrictions
Sensitization risk Moderate

The CIR Expert Panel concludes that citrus-derived peel oils are safe for use in cosmetic products, excluding rinse-off products, and when formulated to be non-sensitizing and non-irritating. For leave-on products, formulations must not contain more than 0.0015% (15 ppm) 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP). EU regulations and IFRA standards require furocoumarin content to be below 1 mg/kg in sun-protection and bronzing products, and finished leave-on products must not exceed 0.0015% 5-MOP. While Mandarin peel oil at 8% in petrolatum was not sensitizing in human tests, overall caution is advised due to potential photosensitization and irritancy from high concentrations or sun exposure. Some Citrus reticulata peels are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for intended use in foods.
