Mechanism of Action
Citrus Sudachi Fruit Juice delivers a rich array of bioactive compounds, including Vitamin C and various flavonoids such as eriocitrin, neoeriocitrin, and hesperidin. These compounds collectively neutralize free radicals and mitigate oxidative stress, thereby reducing inflammation. Sudachitin, a key polymethoxyflavone, specifically inhibits nitric oxide production and inducible nitric oxide synthase in macrophages, and has been observed to decrease MMP-1 and MMP-3 production while increasing TIMP-1 by inhibiting the Akt pathway, thus supporting tissue integrity. Furthermore, components of sudachi, particularly from the peel, have demonstrated the ability to modulate keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation through the inhibition of the EGFR-ERK signaling pathway. The Vitamin C content specifically aids in collagen synthesis and suppresses melanin production, promoting improved skin texture and luminosity.

The Formula
Formulation
Stability
Citrus fruit juice is inherently unstable, prone to rapid decomposition upon environmental exposure, leading to a short shelf life. To preserve active components like Vitamin C, formulation and packaging must be optimized, ideally maintaining a pH below 3.5 for Vitamin C stability.
Conflicts
- High concentrations of photosensitizing furanocoumarins, particularly when combined with sun exposure, can induce phytophotodermatitis.
- Strong bases or other pH-sensitive ingredients should be avoided due to the fruit juice's natural acidity.
Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel deems Citrus fruit-derived ingredients, including Citrus Sudachi Fruit Juice, safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-sensitizing and non-irritating. A critical restriction for leave-on products is the limitation of 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) to a maximum of 0.0015% (15 ppm) to mitigate the risk of phytophotodermatitis, a phototoxic reaction associated with furocoumarins in citrus fruits. While the U.S. FDA recognizes citrus fruits as GRAS for food, animal studies on Citrus sudachi peel extract powder indicated a 'slightly irritating' potential (Primary Dermal Irritation Index 0.8) for skin and 'minimally irritating' for eyes (Maximum Mean Total Score 2.7).
