The CIR Expert Panel concluded that citrus peel oils, including Bergamot, are safe for use in cosmetic products (excluding rinse-off formulations) when the concentration of 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) does not exceed 0.0015% (15 ppm), and when the final product is formulated to be non-sensitizing and non-irritating. There is a documented concern that citrus-derived peel oils might promote tumors if the formulation induces irritation. European Union and IFRA regulations also specify stringent limits on furocoumarin content, particularly total bergapten, which should not exceed 0.0015% in leave-on products applied to sun-exposed skin. Using a furocoumarin-free variant is paramount for safe cosmetic application.
