Limonene, a major component, is unstable in the presence of heat and light. To prevent phototoxicity, especially in leave-on products, the content of 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) should not exceed 0.0015% (15 ppm). Distilled lime oil is preferred to minimize phototoxicity. The pH range of 4.0-6.5 is indicated for related citrus extracts and provides a general stability guideline.

However, the European Commission's SCCS reports this substance as an established contact allergen in humans. Expressed lime oils may have phototoxic potential due to furocoumarins; therefore, distilled lime oil is generally preferred to ensure safer use. Avoid direct sunlight exposure after using products containing lime oil due to potential photosensitization.
